Quantitative Energy-dispersive Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis of Individual Particles

چکیده
An electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) technique using an energy-dispersive X-ray detector with an ultra-thin window, designated low-Z particle EPMA, has been developed. The low-Z particle EPMA allows the quantitative determination of concentrations of low-Z elements such as C, N, and O, as well as higher-Z elements that can be analyzed by conventional energydispersive EPMA. The quantitative determination of low-Z elements (using full Monte Carlo simulations, from the electron impact to the X-ray detection) in individual environmental particles has improved the applicability of single-particle analysis, especially in atmospheric environmental aerosol research; many environmentally important atmospheric particles, e.g. sulfates, nitrates, ammonium, and carbonaceous particles, contain low-Z elements. The low-Z particle EPMA was applied to characterize loess soil particle samples of which the chemical compositions are well defined by the use of various bulk analytical methods. Chemical compositions of the loess samples obtained from the low-Z particle EPMA turn out to be close to those from bulk analyses. In addition, it is demonstrated that the technique can also be used to assess the heterogeneity of individual particles.

Barriers to Quantitative Electron Probe X-Ray Microanalysis for Low Voltage Scanning Electron Microscopy
Low voltage x-ray microanalysis, defined as being performed with an incident beam energy ≤5 keV, can achieve spatial resolution, laterally and in depth, of 100 nm or less, depending on the exact selection of beam energy and the composition of the target. The shallow depth of beam penetration, with the consequent short path length for x-ray absorption, and the low overvoltage, the ratio of beam ...

This paper describes an innovative process for the production of ferrochromium alloy via segregation reduction of chromite at 1300 ◦C in the presence of calcium chloride. Both charcoal and petroleum coke were used as the reductant. Individual polycrystalline ferrochrome carbide particles were produced, with their particle size and shape resembling that of the starting carbon particles. Interact...
متن کاملProspects for Trace Analysis in the Analytical Electron-Microscope
The analytical electron microscope (AEM) uses a high energy (>100 kV) beam of electrons to generate a range of signals from a thin foil sample as shown in figure la [1,2]. Various detectors are configured in the AEM to pick up most of the generated signals (fig. lb). Microanalysis is usually performed using the characteristic x-ray signal, detected by an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) alt...

In this work, quantitative energy-dispersive electron probe X-ray microanalysis (ED-EPMA) (called low-Z particle EPMA), Raman microspectrometry (RMS), and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (ATR-FTIR) imaging were applied in combination for the analysis of the same individual airborne particles for the first time. After examining individual particles of microm...

Microchemical glass standards were used to validate a quantitation method based on peak-to-background (P/B) ratios from electron probe x-ray microanalysis spectra. This standardless method was applied to the determination of concentrations of individual particles from Malpha or Lalpha lines, as well as from Kalpha lines. The algorithm was tested on particulate glass samples for diameters rangin...
